CNN is reporting highly coordinated terrorist bombings in London.
6 bombings in the Underground system and a 7th blew the deck off a double-decker bus.

Now the Underground system trafficks about 3 million people a day, and the bad guys (whoever they turn out to be, assumedly it's AQ but nobody is sure yet) struck key stations during rush hour. So one would expect a massive death toll.

Consider me underwhelmed by the whopping total so far of 40 deaths.

40.

I mean jesus, that's not even 6 people per bomb. Specialists estimate that this plan took 15 people. It looks like the bad guys would have done better to walk into buildings and shoot 4 people each.

If this is the extent of their power and expertise, and they have dropped from a 3,000-kill operation (9/11) to not even 100 with similar manpower (19 hijackers to 15 bombers), then they may as well give up. Part of me hopes these terrorists turn out to be amateurs so that our war can still have some competent villians.

Oh, and fuck the Terrorists and Long Live The British Empire. I'll have tea for lunch in solidarity.

That death toll is going to climb though. Rescue workers have so far had to leave many bodies in the subway wreckage that haven't become part of the official total yet. There'll be a more accurate total by the end of the day I would think.

But regardless of the actual number, they've already accomplished EXACTLY what they set out to do. London is paralyzed because nobody can move around, and Great Britain is embarrassed because it happens just as they were hosting the G8 Summit. I'm sure the terrorists are loving the fact that this comes a couple days after London was announced as being the site for the 2012 Olympics as well.

What remains to be seen is who Britons will become the angriest at -- the terrorists, Blair for getting them involved in Afghanistan and Iraq, or the U.S. for starting those wars?

Yeah. Despite my somewhat glib tone above, I expect the death toll to be much higher. When I heard the news I was extremely surprised to hear less than 3 or 400 dead. I expect the number of injuries to be pretty ugly, especially from smoke inhalation.

On the news this morning they had a guy who was upset that the Underground wasn't shut down as soon as the first blast occured. I don't think the guy knew that the first event was believed to be a mechanical failure at first. If it comes out that it was known to be a bomb, they will be very mad at some London Transport bureaucrat.

If the British people lay this bullshit at America's feet instead of at the people who put the bombs in the trains then I will be very pissed.

Well, the number actually dropped for now from 40 to 33. Cold comfort I guess, but I'll take it.
